What to photograph, how to take clear pictures, and how the in-app camera works for LOTO procedures.
Why photos matter for LOTO procedures
Photos eliminate ambiguity at isolation points. A clear photo shows the worker exactly which disconnect to lock, which valve to close, or where to test for zero energy. This is especially important for complex equipment, rarely-serviced machines, or when the worker approaching the job may not be the person who wrote the procedure.

- Photos also serve as audit evidence that isolation points were correctly identified during procedure authoring.
What to photograph for each step
- The energy source label or nameplate: captures the equipment identifier and ratings.
- The isolation device in its locked/off position: shows the breaker, valve, or disconnect as it should look when properly isolated.
- The verification point, where the worker tests for zero energy (voltmeter on terminals, pressure gauge at zero, physical confirmation of blocked movement).
- A wide establishing shot: provides context so the worker can find the right panel or equipment bay when they arrive.

How to take good pictures
Hold the camera steady and let it focus before capturing. Make sure the area is well-lit: use a flashlight if the isolation point is inside a dark cabinet. Fill the frame with the relevant detail (not the entire room). Avoid glare on labels by angling the camera slightly. The in-app PhotoCapture component automatically compresses images to WebP format at a maximum of 1280 pixels and 1 MB, so photos load fast on mobile devices in the field.
Tips
- Retake photos if equipment labeling changes or if the photo is blurry.
- Always capture the isolation device in its locked/off position, never photograph it in the normal operating state.
- If the isolation point has multiple identical devices side by side, include a unique landmark or label in frame.
Photo examples: what works and what doesn't
A good photo clearly shows a single isolation device with its label visible and the lock applied. A bad photo is blurry, too dark, too far away, or shows equipment in the normal running position. When in doubt, take the photo again. It only takes a few seconds and can prevent a serious mistake later.
